Ariel
Ariel -- no it's not named after a mermaid -- is my follow up to Persephone. Despite having more stitches and cable crossings (24,908 sts & 1,702 cable crossings) than Persephone (23,952 sts & 1,255 cable crossings), Ariel is much simpler to work than Persephone because it is not as easy to confuse the knit-only cables with the knit/purl-combo cables. All the knit-only cables are worked over 4 stitches. All the knit/purl-combo cables are worked over 3 stitches.
Miranda will be the next scarf in this series of cable scarves, so stay tuned for that one. Can't post everything at once, can I? Gotta make sure my readers come back... ;-)
Ariel was knitted with 6 balls of Online Linie Marly using 4mm/US6 needles. The scarf dimensions are 70 x 7 inches ( 178 cm x 18 cm). Unfortunately I can't tell you exactly how much yarn was used. The yarn label says 100% merino superwash wool; 130m/142yds per 50gm/1.75oz ball. However Elann measured a ball at 104m/113yds. You can see a photo of the yarn label below (at the end of this post). So the actual amount of yarn used could be as low as 624m/678yds or as high as 780m/854yds of DK weight yarn. I'm inclined to go with Elann's measurements since I didn't feel I was getting much mileage out of each ball of yarn.
Stitches used in this scarf include:
Seed Stitch, BW1 pg 11
Serpentine Cables, Bw1 pg 286
Please email me if you would like your photo and a link to your blog (if you have one) to appear in My Readers' Gallery.

Such a beautiful scarf. I look forward to attempting this.
yay! you know I've been waiting on this one. I love the color! :)
What a fantastic scarf!
It looks just beautiful. Are you using all the child names/dog names you like, so your next mouths to feed can have names like Ken or Rover? ;-)
Thank you so much for posting this pattern! I have been waiting and I love it! I can't wait to start making it. It's on my "to make" list... along with a thousand other patterns *laugh*
I love your designs.
sorry, but while i love cables, this scarf just cant measure up to the persephone scarf (im half way through that one and i love it :D)
It is gorgeous! Thank you for sharing the pattern.
You come up with the prettiest patterns :)
happy knitting :)
I love all your work, but WOW this scarf takes the cake. Beautiful colour, STUNNING pattern. Well done!!!
Love the scarf, Marie, and I also love Marly. I THOUGHT I had enough for an aran sweater, but now I am going to have to go back and take another look. I didn't know about the discrepancy in the yardage. Do you have any balls left? It's hard to believe that scarf could use 800 yards. I have some weighing to do with that Marly.
I've been waiting for the pattern for this, as my name is Ariel! Not only is it gorgeous, but I kind of have to like it!
I just wanted to let you know that it made me smile that the next one is named Miranda, my little sister who passed away a few years ago. I'll have to make both to give to my mother. :)
Beautiful work, Marie. Love the scarf and the colour you chose. I have to try one of these for next winter. Can't wait to see what Miranda looks like.
marie that is stunning both in design and color. i'm downloading the pattern with plans to make it from some stashed and well marinated merino (but i won't be marinated when making it...with all the cables haha). Last night at hospital one of the nurses I taught to knit last year decided she's ready to do cables and when i showed her your site and the 3AM Cable Hat, she downloaded it for her first cable project. Look at your influence on knitters as far away as Alaska! See ya in June!
Stunning, absolutely stunning! You are one of the best pattern writers on the web!! Thank you for being so generous, Marie... much appreciated.
All your work is lovely!
It is so pretty!
I think that step #20 is missing a stitch in this pattern... I keep counting it and I always get 51 instead of 52. Should I P4 or P2 at the end where it says P3 or P1? I'm really terrible at reading stitches, so I don't know. I'm guessing that I should P4.
This is a beautiful scarf. Thanks for posting it! Looking forward to Miranda.
sad! i can't manage to make this pattern show up anywhere! is it still up on the web? the scarf is BEAUTIFUL and i want to try it!
Are you perhaps a Firefly fan?
Thank you for all the fantastic patterns! I'm really looking forward to knitting the stunning Persephone, Ariel and Miranda scarves.
I just used your pattern to create a bath mat, it turned out beautifully! I've linked back to your site on my blog: ecb.edesignsfashion.com You can see the finished product for yourself! ...I'm still slogging away at finishing the scarf version!
